Why piano for children?

More than
the notes.

Piano lessons give children time to listen, explore and enjoy making progress. Here are five things they can practise along the way.

Find their starting point
  1. Listening and attention

Following a melody and keeping a rhythm encourage children to listen closely and focus on the music.

  2. Hand coordination

Playing with both hands gives children practice in coordinating movement and controlling their fingers.

  3. Confidence in small steps

Learning a piece, a little at a time, gives children progress they can hear and feel proud of.

  4. Patience and persistence

Working through a tricky passage shows how regular practice can make something difficult feel more manageable.

  5. Creative expression

Exploring sounds, favourite tunes and different ways of playing gives children a space to express themselves.

A lifetime with the piano

Hello, I’m Aliona.

I’m Aliona Petrosidou, a piano tutor based in Edinburgh. Piano has been part of my life since childhood, and I love helping students of all ages and abilities find their confidence at the keyboard.

My musical education began with eight years at music school in Russia. I then spent four years at music college in Greece, where I achieved piano Grades 7 and 8. In 2003, I continued my classical music studies at the University of Wolverhampton.

Today, I offer friendly, one-to-one lessons shaped around each student’s experience, interests and goals. Whether you’re arranging lessons for your child or learning yourself, you’ll find a supportive space to discover music and build your skills step by step.

Let’s talk about your lessons

Something else on your mind?
I’d be happy to help

Is it okay to start as a complete beginner?

Yes. I welcome beginners of all ages. We can start with the basics and build from there, at a pace that suits you.

Do we need a piano at home?

Yes. You’ll need a piano at home for regular practice between lessons, even if your lessons take place at my home. Practice is an important part of learning and helps you build your skills and make steady progress.

Where in Edinburgh do you teach?

I teach at my home in Edinburgh and can also visit students at home. Let me know your area when you enquire and we can discuss the arrangements.

A good place to begin

Shall we make
some music?

Tell me who the lessons are for and what you’d like to learn. I’ll be happy to talk through the next steps.
